Significant increase in prices of most of the essential kitchen items was witnessed during the past week against the preceding week, revealed a survey conducted by Business Recorder on Saturday. Traders in different markets of the twin cities of Rawalpindi/ Islamabad said that prices of essential food items including chicken, eggs and some vegetables peaked during the past week against the preceding week.

They maintained that markets of the twin cities were facing shortage of flour and it was being sold by retailers at rates of their choice. The survey noted sharp increase in chicken and eggs price during last week as compared to the preceding week, as chicken was being sold at Rs 170-175 per kg against Rs 165 per kg last week price, registering an increase of Rs 5-10 per kg. Slight increase was also observed in the price of eggs, as they were available at Rs 135-140 per dozen against Rs 130 per dozen last week price, registering an increase of Rs 5-10 per dozen. Meat prices remained stable during last week as compared to the preceding week, as mutton was available at Rs 560 per kg and beef at Rs 360 per kg.

Mixed trend was observed in vegetables prices during the last week as compared to the preceding week as some of them registered a significant increase while prices of others remained unchanged last week as compared to the preceding week. The survey revealed that tomato was available at Rs 70 per kg against Rs 55 per kg last week price registering an increase of Rs 15 per kg, onions were being sold at Rs 45 per kg, potato was available at Rs 40 per kg, cabbage at Rs 40 per kg, carrot at Rs 40 per kg, peas were being sold at Rs 70 per kg, radish at Rs 40 per kg and green-chili at Rs 80 per kg during last week as compared to the preceding week.

The survey also noted mixed trend in fruit prices as some registered decline while prices of other remained unchanged during the last week as compared to the preceding week. Apple was available at Rs 140-160 against Rs 160-220 per kg last week price registering a decrease of Rs 20-60 per kg, banana was being sold at Rs 135-150 per dozen, guava was being sold at Rs 100-120 per kg, fruiter was available at Rs 90-100 per dozen, Kinoow was being sold at Rs 110 per dozen, Shakiry Malta was available at Rs 140-180 per dozen and Orange was being sold at Rs 130 per dozen during the last week as compared to the preceding week.

Meanwhile, the survey noted that sugar prices decreased by Rs 2 per kg, as it was available at Rs 56 per kg against Rs 58 per kg last week price, while 20 kg flour bag was being sold at Rs 650 during last week as compared to the preceding week. Meanwhile, prices of entire range of pulses remained stable last week as compared to the preceding week as Daal Mash was available at Rs 140, Moong at Rs 140 per kg, Lobia at Rs 150 per kg, Masoor at Rs 120 per kg, Channa at Rs 110per kg and white Channa at Rs 120-160 per kg during the last week as compared to the preceding week.
